Plein Air Convention & Expo - 2017

San Diego, CA

I traveled with my good friend and mentor Charles H. White to this year's event where we found the largest gathering of artists we have ever encountered. The showroom of outdoor painting suppliers was bigger and better than ever. We painted around the hotel at the San Diego marina on the first day, old town San Diego on the next, followed by Point Loma and finally Balboa Park. Keeping up the caliber of this event, Plein Air magazine publisher B. Eric Rhoads manages to keep up the PACE and quality of this event in spite of the challenges presented by it's immense popularity.

Everyone in the community was happy and appeared to be having the time of their lives - I was no exception. Once again, I painted in the field with the assistance of several celebrity artists, whom I seldom recognize when they stop by to help, but later found out I got advice on the first day from Jeremy Lipkin!

I met old friends from other events like George Kreutz and Bill Davidson, new ones including Tim Russell of Fallbrook, CA and Susan Nicholas-Gephart from PA when we gathered for some of the BEST Mexican food (and margaritas) I have ever had at the restaurant Guadalhara.
